Attributes

Attributes are named dimensions — such as Size, Color, or Fit — that describe your SKUs. Each attribute holds an ordered list of values, and each value carries a short SKU code used when generating variant SKU codes. Manage attributes at /principal/attributes in the Principal Catalog section.
Your organization may use a different name for attributes. Administrators can rename this and other catalog terms in SettingsTerminology. See Terminology.

Attributes list

The list page shows every attribute with its position, Name, Description, and a Values count. Use the search box to filter by name or description, and the table settings menu to export the list to CSV.
  • Click a row to open the attribute’s detail page.
  • Click New attribute to create one.

Creating an attribute

1

Open the dialog

Click New attribute on the attributes list page.
2

Name and describe it

Enter a Name (for example, Size, Color, or Fit) and an optional Description for context.
3

Add values

Click Add value for each value. Give each a display name (for example, Small) and a short code (for example, SM). Codes are limited to 4 characters, uppercase letters and numbers only, and auto-generate from the name until you edit them.
4

Save

Click Create attribute.
When editing an existing attribute from the dialog, only the name and description are editable there — follow the Open detail page to edit values link to manage values.

Attribute detail page

The detail page has two sections:
  • Metadata — edit the attribute’s Name and Description.
  • Values — the full value list, with columns for the value name, its SKU code, a filter link, and actions.

Managing values

  • Add a value — click Add value and fill in the name and code. Codes follow the same rules as in the create dialog: up to 4 characters, uppercase, letters and numbers only.
  • Rename a value or change its code — edit the row inline.
  • Reorder values — drag a row by its handle. The display order is used wherever the values are shown or grouped, and saves as you drop.
  • Remove a value — click the trash icon. The row is marked for removal (shown struck through with a Restore option) and the removal becomes permanent when you click Save all. Removal can fail server-side if any SKUs still reference the value.
  • See which SKUs use a value — click the View skus link in the row to open the SKU list filtered to that value.
Edits are staged: a sticky bar tracks unsaved changes (added, edited, removed, metadata) with Discard and Save all buttons. Saving applies additions first, then edits, then removals, and stops at the first failure.

Best practices

Value codes (up to 4 characters) are joined together when generating variant SKU codes — for example, NVY and M can become part of TSHIRT-NVY-M. Pick codes your team recognizes at a glance.
Value order on the detail page controls how values appear wherever they are shown or grouped — filters, columns, and generated variants. Drag sizes into S, M, L order rather than leaving them alphabetical.
Use the row’s View skus link to see which SKUs carry a value before removing it. Removal fails if SKUs still reference the value.
A short description (“Garment size, US sizing”) helps teammates pick the right attribute when several look similar.
